The Fitter is responsible for ensuring plant reliability by performing mechanical maintenance, repairs and installation activities. The role supports safe and efficient operations by diagnosing faults, preventing equipment failures and complying with all applicable safety and maintenance standards.
Key Responsibilities
Mechanical Maintenance and Repairs
- Perform planned, preventative and breakdown maintenance on plant equipment.
- Investigate, fault-find and diagnose the root causes of mechanical failures.
- Repair machines and fit or replace worn or defective parts.
- Conduct inspections to identify potential mechanical risks and early equipment failures.
- Record all completed work on job cards.
- Carry out routine and preventative maintenance on mechanical equipment according to maintenance standards.
- Maintain workshop equipment, tools and lifting equipment to ensure availability, functionality and safety.
- Conduct condition-monitoring activities, including vibration checks, temperature readings and visual inspections.
- Find solutions to plant problems as directed by the Line Manager and take appropriate remedial action.
Installation, Commissioning and Shutdown Activities
- Install, commission and decommission mechanical equipment.
- Assist with shutdown planning and execution.
- Perform pre-shutdown inspections and post-shutdown reporting.
- Ensure equipment is correctly aligned, tested and handed back to operations.
- Verify equipment performance following installation or major repairs.
Safety, Compliance and Governance
- Ensure adherence to Occupational Health and Safety standards.
- Report any injuries on duty immediately to the Line Manager.
- Immediately report unsafe working conditions, practices and installations.
- Participate in safety meetings, toolbox talks and risk assessments.
- Maintain proper housekeeping standards in the work area.
Coordination, Reporting and Support
- Meet with the Line Manager daily to review maintenance activities and plan work.
- Coordinate with other trades to complete work orders and projects efficiently.
- Provide on-the-job training and guidance to apprentices.
- Assist the Line Manager with general administrative tasks, including job feedback and reporting.
- Perform standby duties as required.
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 12 / N3 Certificate in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
- Recognised Trade Test Certificate as a Fitter.
- Code B / C1 Driver’s Licence.
- At least 1 year of post-trade experience as a Fitter, preferably in the wastewater and water treatment industry.
- Experience in mechanical maintenance, fault-finding, troubleshooting, assessment, stripping and repair of pumps, gearboxes, filter belt presses, mechanical screens, grit classifiers, rotating equipment and similar mechanical equipment.
